At Hanscomb Glass Studio, we work with light as much as we work with glass. For over four decades, Neil Hanscomb and the Hanscomb Glass team have been creating original glass artwork for homes, businesses and architectural spaces. From striking feature windows to elegant glass partitions and decorative installations, each commission begins with an understanding of the space it will become part of.

We don't believe in making a piece of art and simply finding somewhere to put it. 
We believe the space itself should inspire the art.

The process for a commissioned piece

Creating a commissioned piece is a collaborative experience. We bring the artistic vision, technical knowledge and decades of glassworking experience, while you bring the space, its purpose and an understanding of how you want it to feel.
  • 01. Getting to know your space

    Every project begins with a conversation. We want to understand your space, how you use it and what you hope to achieve. Perhaps you'd like more privacy without losing natural light, a striking focal point in your home or an artistic solution to an architectural challenge. Through photographs, conversations and, where appropriate, an in-person visit, we assess the light, layout, surrounding architecture and overall atmosphere. It's this understanding that gives us the foundation for a truly personal piece.

  • 02. Design Process

    With a clear sense of your space and its needs, we begin exploring the creative possibilities. Neil and the team develop preliminary sketches and design concepts that respond to the setting, considering everything from the composition and materials to the way light will pass through the finished glass. Communication is an important part of this stage. We'll discuss the proposed direction with you, refine the details and agree on a design that feels right for your environment. Once the design, scope and estimate are approved, we're ready to bring the piece to life.

  • 03. Creation & Installation

    With the design approved, our team brings the piece to life using decades of experience, craftsmanship and specialist glass working techniques. Every piece is made in our Elora studio under the supervision of Neil or Gisela, with careful attention to every detail. The result is an original work of art that feels right at home in your space, transforming light, adding character and creating something beautiful to enjoy for years to come. Once your piece is finished, an installation date will be scheduled.

Understanding the Investment

Approximate Pricing

Every commission is different, and so is the work involved in bringing it to life.
Our stained and leaded glass commissions typically start at approximately $450 CAD per square foot, with the final price reflecting the size, design, materials and techniques involved.
Size is only one part of the equation. A smaller, highly detailed composition can require considerably more time and specialist work than a larger, simpler design.

What influences the price?

  • Size & design complexity:  The scale of the piece, the intricacy of the composition and the time required to create it.
  • Glass selection:  Different types of glass vary in cost, texture, colour and availability.
  • Specialist techniques: Processes such as sandblasting, painting, fusing and other glass treatments require additional time and craftsmanship.
  • Site visits & installation: Travel to assess your space and the installation of finished work are quoted separately and are not included in the base square-foot price.

Estimates & Deposits

Once we've discussed your project and established its scope, we'll provide an estimate based on the proposed design and requirements.
A 20% deposit is required to begin work following approval of the estimate.
