Welcome to Hanscomb Glass Studio, where traditional craftsmanship, contemporary design and a love of creative experimentation have come together since 1983.
Founded by Neil Hanscomb and built alongside Gisela Ruehe, what began as a small stained glass studio has grown into an established name in contemporary glass artistry. Known for our distinctive approach to light, texture and design, our work can be found in homes and spaces across North America.
Yet at heart, we're still a hands-on, family-run studio with a close-knit team, a love of making things and an endless curiosity for what glass can become.
Our story began in Fergus, Ontario, where Neil Hanscomb established his first glass studio in 1983, inspired by a growing fascination with the possibilities of the material. Gisela joined him the following year, and together they moved the studio to Elora in 1986, drawn to the town's thriving artistic community.
Over four decades later, Hanscomb Glass has become an established part of Elora's creative landscape, recognized for its distinctive contemporary glasswork and thoughtful approach to light, texture and design. While our work has evolved and found its way into homes and architectural spaces across North America, we've remained true to our beginnings: an independent, family-run studio built on craftsmanship, curiosity and a genuine love for what we do.
Today, our familiar yellow heritage building on Church Street is home to both our working studio and a versatile shop filled with a variety of beautiful glass pieces from home decor to one-of-a-kind portal and panels.
Behind our storefront in downtown Elora is a 1,500-square-foot working studio where ideas take shape and glass is transformed into art.
Equipped with four kilns, flameworking and sandblasting stations, our workshop is a lively, hands-on environment filled with works in progress, sketches, tools and materials. It's a space where decades of experience meet ongoing experimentation, and where traditional glassworking techniques are continually explored and reimagined.
Everything we create takes shape here, from our collection of functional glassware, ornaments and decorative pieces to original architectural windows and large-scale commissions. Each project brings its own creative challenges, whether we're developing a new design, experimenting with repurposed materials or exploring the relationship between glass, light and space.
It's this combination of craftsmanship, imagination and a willingness to explore new possibilities that continues to define Hanscomb Glass.
From fine woodworking to glass artistry, Neil's creative journey led him to open Hanscomb Glass Studio. His curiosity, craftsmanship and love of experimentation continue to shape the studio and its ever-evolving work.
The heart of the studio's daily operations, Gisela keeps things running smoothly. She's also a talented flameworking artist, bringing beautiful glass ornaments to life which you can browse online and in our store.
Krista discovered her passion for stained glass in 1997 and hasn't looked back. With years of experience across Ontario glass studios, she brings a wonderful mix of skill and creativity to the Hanscomb team.
Elora has been our creative home for four decades, and we couldn't imagine a better place to have built our business.
We've had the pleasure of watching this wonderful town grow and evolve, welcoming generations of visitors, working alongside talented local artists and becoming part of a community that genuinely values creativity and independent businesses.
Our studio has grown alongside Elora, but we've never lost sight of the small beginnings that brought us here. We're still very much a working studio, where ideas are sketched out, glass is cut and shaped, and there's usually something new happening at the workbench.
Whether you've known us for years or are discovering our shop for the first time, we're always happy to welcome you in.
