Workshop Details:

A day for play and exploration.
Learn glass imagery techniques with vitreous enamels in a one-day hands-on workshop. Learn how to mix enamels, apply them with different brushes and tools, and explore a variety of techniques such as textural mark-making, scraffito, tracing, matting, layering, and stencil work.
Instructor Bio:

Meet Heather Wood, an experienced Canadian glass artist and educator.
What’s Included:

All materials, tools, and kiln firing are provided. Because it is a one day class, the work can only be fired once at the end of the class. If any participants have their own kilns, they can take what they have learned and fire the piece or pieces again in their home kiln. Glass samples and books will be available for reference.

What You’ll Learn

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the creative possibilities of painting and embellishing glass with vitreous enamels. Suitable for both beginners and those with prior glass-painting experience, the class provides a solid foundation in essential techniques while also offering fresh approaches for more advanced makers.

Hands-on glass painting with vitreous enamels. earn how to mix glass enamels, explore different application methods, and experiment with a variety of brushes and tools.

Making textural marks on glass through additive and subtractive techniques.Using the scraffito method to remove enamels and create fine detail. Traditional techniques of tracing and matting, as well as layering enamel for depth.

Working with dry enamels and stencils to achieve different effects. Understanding firing schedules to ensure successful results.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will take home their flat glass showcasing their experiments with texture, layering, and imagery.

Meet the Instructor

Heather Wood is a Canadian glass artist whose work explores light, texture, and imagery through glass. Before establishing her own studio, she collaborated with glassblower John Kepkiewicz, where their partnership combined hot glass with intricate surface treatments.

Her work draws heavily on imagery from plants, trees, and animals, exploring their role as cultural symbols and their connection to the natural world.

Heather's work has been exhibited across Canada and she brings both technical expertise and creative inspiration to her workshops.

Bring with you a water bottle. Please remember to wear long pants and closed toed shoes. 

Please plan to arrive within 15 minutes before the class starts. This window of time is crucial for settling in, setting up any necessary materials, and ensuring a timely start for everyone. 

Engaging in stained glass artistry offers a unique and rewarding experience. However, it's important to acknowledge that working with materials such as glass, lead, and flux carries certain health risks if proper precautions are not taken. This is especially pertinent for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, as exposure to lead and certain chemical fumes can pose risks to both maternal health and child development.

Please note that our workshops are non-refundable. If you need to reschedule, we kindly request that you do so at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled class date. For cancellations occurring within 72 hours of the workshop, a fee equivalent to 50% of your payment will be retained.
